Education is not the filling of a pail,
but the lighting of a fire.
but the lighting of a fire.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.

Proverbs 1:7a
I love that we have the freedom in this country to choose what form of education we want our children to receive. It’s such a blessing to know that, as parents, we have a variety of options to choose from: public, private, alternative, or home-based education. When my husband and I were trying to decide which option would be best for our family, we discussed the pros and cons of each possibility. After much thoughtful consideration, we decided we wanted to educate our children at home. We made this decision while I was pregnant with our first child. Fast-forward 17 years and we are now a homeschooling family with four precious children, ages 17, 15, 13 and 6. I would describe our homeschooling style as eclectic which is just a fancy way of saying we do what works for us. One resource that helped us greatly at the beginning was the book The Well-Trained Mind written by Susan Wise Bauer and Jessie Wise.; it outlines a classical approach to education. Over the years we have followed this method loosely, while also incorporating some Charlotte Mason ideas. We have also been blessed to be a part of a vibrant homeschooling community that has provided our family with many wonderful opportunities and experiences.
